In this video, we begin our Chief Mate MMD Stability preparation with one of the important topics in Ship Stability Dry Docking.
This session introduces the basic principles of dry docking and explains what happens to a vessels stability as the water level in the dock is gradually reduced and the ship starts transferring its weight from the water to the dock blocks.
The class also introduces the study plan for the Stability module and the major topics that will be covered during the course.

DRY DOCKING TOPICS EXPLAINED
In this lesson, we discuss:
What is Dry Docking
Transfer of vessels weight from water to dock blocks
Reduction of water level inside the dry dock
Different water line stages
WL1 WL2 and subsequent water line stages
First contact of the vessel with the dock blocks
Critical period during Dry Docking
Change in vessels draft
Change in KB
Change in KM
KG during Dry Docking
Change in GM
Virtual Loss of GM
Maintaining positive GM
Ballast management
Vessel alignment in dry dock
Checking underwater obstructions
Proper positioning over dock blocks
VIRTUAL LOSS OF GM
One of the most important concepts introduced in this video is the Virtual Loss of GM during Dry Docking.
As the water level inside the dock falls, the vessels draft changes. This results in changes to the underwater volume and hydrostatic properties of the vessel.
As the vessel progressively takes weight on the dock blocks, the effective buoyancy and hydrostatic condition change.
This affects KB, BM and KM and consequently changes the vessels GM.
For the basic dry docking calculation, KG is considered unchanged unless there is an actual movement or transfer of weight.
Understanding this concept is essential before attempting Dry Docking numerical problems in the Chief Mate MMD examination.
CRITICAL PERIOD DURING DRY DOCKING
The period when the vessel begins to take weight on the dock blocks is particularly important from a stability point of view.
The vessel must maintain sufficient positive GM throughout the operation.
Proper ballast management, correct positioning of the vessel and continuous monitoring are essential during the docking operation.
WHY DRY DOCKING IS IMPORTANT FOR CHIEF MATE
Dry Docking combines several important Stability concepts.
Draft
Displacement
KB
BM
KM
KG
GM
Weight transfer
Hydrostatic particulars
Stability calculations
A clear understanding of the theory makes the numerical problems much easier to solve.
