Sir Aldwyn of Merrowgate walks the last mile on foot, leading his horse Bramble by the reins, until a light shows through the trees: a lantern hanging from an inn sign. They say the inn is named for two lanterns: the one on its sign, and the one a traveller brings in from the dark. Tonight it is Aldwyn's, the lantern that never goes out. Inside, the fire is lit and a bard tunes his lute in the corner. Aldwyn warms his hands at the hearth, listens to the common room slowly fall quiet, and by candlelight writes a letter he will never send. At the first grey light the rain has passed. He saddles Bramble, and the road home goes on.
