Ten migrant Registered Nurses in New Zealand worked more than 1,500 unpaid hours while waiting for their visas — even though they had already been offered nursing jobs. They were described as “volunteers.” But if a Registered Nurse is repeatedly doing normal nursing shifts, does calling them a volunteer mean the work should be unpaid? In this week’s Weekly Global Nursing News, I break down what happened to these 10 migrant nurses, why the employment relationship was treated as starting from their first “volunteer” shift, and how NZ$51,925.45 in wage and holiday-pay arrears plus interest became due. This case is especially important for international nurses planning to work abroad, because a job offer, visa process and employment rights are not the same thing. We also cover: • New WHO Europe data on whether countries are training enough new nurses for the future • Why a nursing shortage does not automatically mean more overseas jobs or easier visas • A serious Uttar Pradesh hospital case involving allegations that a hospital manager described as a BSc Nursing student performed an operation after a doctor reportedly did not arrive • Indian Railways Nursing Superintendent recruitment under CEN 05/2026 CHAPTERS 00:00 New Zealand Nurses Working Unpaid 01:21 10 Migrant Nurses & 1,500+ Unpaid Hours 05:00 Is Europe Training Enough Future Nurses? 07:30 Uttar Pradesh Hospital Surgery Case 09:29 Final Nursing Takeaway IMPORTANT The New Zealand story involved 10 migrant Registered Nurses, not nursing students. The nurses reportedly completed more than 1,500 unpaid hours across ordinary shifts, with additional unpaid public-holiday hours. The outcome involved approximately NZ$51,925.45 in wage and holiday-pay arrears plus interest. This should not be described as a proven modern-slavery, trafficking or intentional migrant-exploitation case. The WHO Europe update is about nursing workforce sustainability and future nurse supply. It is not a new Europe nursing recruitment campaign, visa route or international job announcement. The Uttar Pradesh story remains an allegation and investigation matter. There has been no final conviction, so the individual should not be described as proven responsible for the patient’s death. If you are planning an overseas nursing career, always check these separately: • Nursing registration • Job offer • Employment contract • Salary and working conditions • Sponsorship • Visa requirements • Your employment rights The biggest lesson this week: Job offer ≠ free labour Nursing shortage ≠ guaranteed job Registration ≠ sponsorship Visa process ≠ loss of employment rights If an overseas employer asked you to work unpaid clinical nursing shifts while waiting for your visa, would you agree?
