🚚 Everything I'd want my own family to know about driving around big trucks, in one short guide.
📘 SHARING THE ROAD WITH BIG TRUCKS - get it here: https://clydebarrett.com
You've driven past a truck stop on a freezing night and seen them: rows of big rigs sitting in the dark, exhaust curling out of the stacks, a warm motel sign glowing right across the road. And you've wondered why in the world those drivers stay out there in the cold.
I'm Clyde Barrett. I drove a truck for 42 years, from 1974 to 2016, and I spent more winter nights asleep in a truck cab than I ever spent in my own bed. On the coldest ones, some nights at thirty below, I never once shut the engine off. Here's why, and how we really slept out there.
In this video:
The night my engine died at 3 a.m. in Rawlins, Wyoming, and what woke me up
Why a diesel you shut off at thirty below might not start again till spring
How fuel turns to wax in the cold, and the old tricks we used to stop it
What freezes in a truck's air brakes, and the rookie who learned it the hard way
The honest reason truckers sleep in the cab instead of a motel
The questions folks are too polite to ask: the bathroom, the showers and supper on the road
The night the running engine nearly killed me, and what every driver should know about their tailpipe
What changed with bunk heaters and idling laws, and what I'd still tell a young driver today
No gimmicks and no tall tales. Just what forty winters on I-80 and I-40 taught me about staying warm, staying alive, and listening when the road tries to tell you something.
If you ever drove, tell me the coldest night you spent in a cab and where you were. And if you never did, tell me what the thermometer's saying where you're sitting right now. I read every one.
