Clara Bennett buried her husband eighteen months ago and never once considered that running four hundred head of cattle alone made her anything other than capable.
Then a starving runaway boy turned up hiding in her hay barn, a drifter with nowhere else to be rode up looking for work, and the banker holding her mortgage note started making arrangements that had nothing to do with her ability to pay it. What began as an ordinary roundup season became a gamble on one cattle drive, one storm, and whether a woman who'd learned not to need anyone was willing to let two strangers matter anyway.
This is a story about an empty saddle peg, a hundred and twenty miles to the rail yard, and how far a guarded woman will go for a ranch, a runaway, and a man who never once tried to manage her.
