Late November 2022 called for a true winter storm in our area with heavy snow, strong winds, and freezing temperatures. Fortunately, cold weather and below-freezing temperatures are short-lived on the BC Coast, but they can still do a lot of damage to your boat if you don't prepare it properly. In this video, I cover the winterization of the freshwater system. My process does NOT involve filling the main water tank, nor the hot water tank with gallons and gallons of plumbing antifreeze. (We can't stand the smell or taste, so we minimize the use of the pink stuff!). Instead, all tanks are fully drained and only a minimal amount of the antifreeze is used to winterize the lines, drains, and head. (I've been doing it this way for over 16 years with no problems.) When the project was completed, I used only 1.5 gallons of the fluid, which saves money and makes for easy recommissioning in the spring - when the smell and taste of the plumbing antifreeze are quickly flushed out. I also cover what I do to protect the tender outboard as well as the canvass over the flybridge in case of heavy snowfall.
