What can help after a young person receives an autism, ADHD, dyslexia or dyscalculia diagnosis?
In this Evolve Skills Academy video, Dr Laura Powling and Kate Crawford-Blake talk directly to young people about what a neurodevelopmental diagnosis can mean, the different emotions that may follow, and practical ways to understand their strengths, challenges and support needs.
The video includes the experiences of young people who have received diagnoses themselves. They discuss school, exams, attention, reading and writing, sensory experiences, friendships, masking, feeling overwhelmed and the strategies they have found helpful.
This can be used as a post-diagnosis support resource for young people and may also be helpful for teachers, SENCOs, parents and carers who want to understand how to support conversations after diagnosis.
The video explores:
• what neurodiversity and neurodivergence mean
• experiences of receiving an autism, ADHD, dyslexia or dyscalculia diagnosis
• challenges with focus, reading, writing, sensory overload, change and social situations
• how stress and overwhelm can build up
• practical strategies including planning, movement breaks and preparing for new situations
• recognising strengths and finding approaches that work for the individual
• talking to trusted adults when worries or low mood become difficult
• why a diagnosis can provide understanding without defining who a young person is
