Climbing Pollux (4,092m) in the Monte Rosa Massif, an alpine ascent that wasn't actually our original plan for the day. We started early from Rifugio Guide del Cervino with the intention of climbing the Breithorn Half Traverse. But after assessing the glacier conditions, our guide decided it wasn't a good idea to continue with the planned route. Instead, we continued towards Pollux, one of the iconic 4,000-metre peaks of the Monte Rosa massif. The summer of 2026 had been exceptionally warm and dry in the Alps. Glacier conditions were poor in many places, with increasingly difficult and potentially dangerous sections of exposed and deteriorating glacier terrain. While the glaciers were suffering from the heat, the conditions higher up on Pollux were very different. The rock itself was completely dry, making the technical climbing sections and the famous chains relatively straightforward and enjoyable.
