The Evolution of the Heart

ISTIGHFAR — A MESSAGE TO THE HEART THAT HAS DRIFTED AWAY FROM ALLAH Now place the Qur'an before your heart Allah سبحانه وتعالى says: وَقُلْتُ اسْتَغْفِرُوا رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهٗ كَانَ غَفَّارًا ۝ يُرْسِلِ السَّمَاءَ عَلَيْكُمْ مِدْرَارًا ۝ وَيُمْدِدْكُمْ بِأَمْوَالٍ وَّبَنِينَ ۝ وَيَجْعَلْ لَّكُمْ جَنَّاتٍ وَّيَجْعَلْ لَّكُمْ أَنْهَارًا "I said: Seek forgiveness from your Lord; surely He is Most Forgiving. He will send down upon you abundant rain from the heavens, strengthen you with wealth and children, and provide for you gardens and flowing rivers." (Surah Nūḥ 71:10–12) Reflect upon this. Prophet Nūḥ عليه السلام did not merely give his people a formula for worldly prosperity. He directed them back to Allah. And how many worldly prescriptions do we pursue today! Do this. Try that. Knock on this door. Seek help from that person. Adopt this strategy. Yet we forget to knock upon the door whose Owner possesses every door. ________________________________________ Fall before Him. And say from the depths of your heart: اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِي ظُلْمًا كَثِيرًا، وَلَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، فَاغْفِرْ لِي مَغْفِرَةً مِنْ عِنْدِكَ وَارْحَمْنِي، إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ "O Allah, I have wronged myself greatly, and none forgives sins except You. So forgive me with a forgiveness from You and have mercy upon me. Indeed, You are the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful." This is the supplication that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq رضي الله عنه. ________________________________________ Then, quietly, keep saying أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ Once. Then: أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ Again. Then: أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ And if tears come— do not hold them back. Perhaps those tears will become among the most precious tears of your entire life. ________________________________________ Remember this Return to your Lord—today. Perhaps this very moment will become the moment after which your entire life changes. أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ رَبِّي مِنْ كُلِّ ذَنْبٍ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ O Allah, purify our outward and inward states. Forgive our sins. Place within our hearts a profound love for You. Make worship not a burden upon us, but the greatest honour of our lives. Grant us such sincere repentance that, thereafter, we regard being distant from You as more frightening than death itself. Āmīn.
