A full day on Puffing Billy, the steam railway in the Dandenong Ranges just outside Melbourne. We rode from Belgrave to Lakeside, sat on the window sills with our legs out (a long-time Puffing Billy tradition), crossed the old timber trestle bridge, had cake at Lakeside and rode back at golden hour. The line first opened in 1900, mostly carrying goods. In 1953 a landslide closed it, and fans formed the Puffing Billy Preservation Society in 1955. Volunteers, helped by army reservists, built a way around the landslide, and the train ran again: Menzies Creek in 1962, Emerald 1965, Lakeside 1975 and Gembrook 1998. Engine 6A, built in 1901, was waiting at Lakeside. Volunteers still help run the railway today. Belgrave to Lakeside takes about an hour. Thanks for riding along!
