What is SLS 3D printing, and how does selective laser sintering work?
In this video, we explain SLS 3D printing, also known as Selective Laser Sintering: an industrial powder bed fusion 3D printing process that uses a laser to fuse polymer powder layer by layer into strong, functional parts. SLS is widely used for functional prototypes, engineering components, complex geometries, and low-volume production parts because it can produce durable nylon parts without traditional support structures.
You’ll learn:
• What SLS 3D printing is
• How the selective laser sintering process works
• Why SLS usually does not need support structures
• Common SLS materials, including PA 12, PA 11, TPU, and filled nylon
• The main advantages and disadvantages of SLS
• When to choose SLS for prototypes, production parts, and real-world manufacturing applications
SLS is especially useful for engineers and product designers who need strong plastic parts with design freedom. Because the surrounding powder supports the part during printing, SLS can create internal channels, lattice structures, snap fits, living hinges, nested parts, and complex assemblies that may be difficult or expensive to make with other manufacturing processes.
Common SLS materials include PA 12 for balanced performance and dimensional stability, PA 11 for greater toughness and ductility, TPU for flexible or rubber-like parts, and glass-filled or mineral-filled nylon when higher stiffness is required. After printing, SLS parts are cooled, depowdered, cleaned, and can be finished further with options such as dyeing, tumbling, vibro polishing, or vapour smoothing to improve appearance and surface feel.
