Demont-Breton painted the women of the fishing villages of northern France with dignity and quiet strength. 👩‍🎨 THE ARTIST Virginie Demont-Breton (1859–1935) was the daughter of the famous painter Jules Breton and one of the most successful women artists of her time. She lived in Wissant, a fishing village on the Channel coast, with her husband, the painter Adrien Demont. She won prizes at the Paris Salon, received the Légion d'honneur and exhibited in France and the United States. ✨ DID YOU KNOW? • This painting was a big success at the Paris Salon of 1889 and was quickly bought by an American collector. • Van Gogh never saw it in person: he copied it from a black-and-white print in the magazine Le Monde Illustré, adding his own colours.
