The Tongan Kupesi | Tui Emma Gillies | TEDxNukualofa

Tui will discuss the Tongan Kupesi and demonstrate how she respectfully combines the traditional practices of the past with contemporary events or issues in the present. Tui Emma Gillies specialises in tapa cloth. Her unique work mixes contemporary with traditional and can be found in significant museum and gallery collections around the globe including Germany, Melbourne, USA, Auckland and many private collections. In 2018, she received the Creative New Zealand Pacific Heritage Art Award. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
