I stayed at a cat guesthouse in Goshogawara, Aomori, Japan, where four adorable cats live: British Shorthairs, a Scottish Fold, and a Munchkin. The guesthouse, Tsugaru-no-Hetcho, opened two years ago after the owner heard that there were not enough places to stay during the busy Goshogawara Neputa festival season. The owner had already been living here with the cats, and before long, they became some of the guesthouse’s most popular residents. 🐱 These cats felt a little different from the Japanese cats I usually meet. They were calm, gentle, and completely at their own pace, each enjoying their own quiet little world. During my stay, they waited outside my room, came in to patrol, and quietly approached when they wanted to be petted. Spending time with them made the whole trip feel slow, peaceful, and relaxing. The guesthouse is located near the Tsugaru Railway, so I also explored the Aomori countryside by local train and visited Shayokan, the birthplace of famous Japanese author Osamu Dazai. Along the way, I enjoyed local Aomori food, beautiful rural scenery, and the peaceful atmosphere of the Tsugaru region.
