THE AFRICAN SLAVE TRADE: The History They Rarely Tell You

The transatlantic slave trade was one of the greatest human tragedies in history — but its full story is far more complex than the simplified version many people were taught. Long before European ships entered West African waters, slavery and slave trading already existed across parts of Africa, the Mediterranean, the Sahara and the Indian Ocean world. Powerful African kingdoms and empires used enslaved labour, captured prisoners during warfare, and in some cases built lucrative commercial relationships with European slave traders. This video examines the rise of West African slaveholding states, the arrival of the Portuguese, the role of African rulers and merchants, and the dramatically different responses of kingdoms such as Congo, Benin and Dahomey. Dahomey became one of the most formidable slaving states in West Africa, while Benin at times restricted its participation in the Atlantic trade. European abolition campaigns would eventually collide with African political and economic interests as Britain and other powers increasingly attempted to suppress the trade during the 19th century. None of this diminishes the horror inflicted upon the millions of Africans who were enslaved, transported and exploited. Instead, it reveals a more complicated historical reality: slavery was a human institution involving competing states, merchants, rulers and societies across continents. History becomes more valuable when we are prepared to examine all of it — including the parts that don't fit comfortably into modern political narratives.
