Gear Hobbing: Generating Motion and Setup Explore this module, with moving diagrams, a worked example, a pause-and-try exercise and a clear explanation of the answer.
Made for Machinist learners. Trace the flow, force, heat or decision path while the narration explains why it works. Pause whenever you need more time.
📘 WHAT YOU WILL LEARN
• Distinguish spur hobbing from indexed form milling, pinion shaping and the supplied historical worm-wheel example.
• Relate hob starts, work teeth and rotational speeds, then calculate feed, travel time and indicator range in original assigned cases.
• Explain hob identity, work location, restraint, alignment and complete setup-clearance checks using original diagrams.
• Plan first-article inspection, condition monitoring, maintenance and evidence-based response to a discrepant gear.
⏱️ CHAPTERS
0:00 The right tool cannot rescue the wrong motion relationship
0:37 Compare forming with generating
1:20 Read the supplied historical example in its own context
1:58 Identify the machine functions
2:42 A hob start is different from a cutting gash
3:20 Follow the phase of a second start
3:59 Derive the straight-spur synchronization ratio
4:38 Close the full turn with a phase table
5:16 Calculate an original work-speed case
5:54 Changing starts changes more than the displayed ratio
6:37 Keep the scope of the simple ratio visible
7:16 Select the hob from the required gear system
7:58 Do not invent the generated root geometry
8:41 Locate the blank and complete the clamping chain
9:22 Check alignment at the relevant reference features
10:00 Calculate total indicated range without relabelling it
10:43 Set the tool axis using the proper convention
11:25 Check the complete moving envelope
12:06 Identify what the axial-feed unit means
12:42 Account for the stated approach and overrun
13:21 Estimate only the time your model includes
14:00 Relate hob diameter and peripheral speed carefully
14:43 Separate hob shift from axial feed
15:23 Make coolant and maintenance equipment-specific
16:04 Verify the first article against the full requirement
16:44 Respond to an assigned over-limit result
17:23 Use the error pattern to organize the investigation
18:04 Pause for a new synchronization and travel case
18:57 Check the independent answers
19:41 Check the setup evidence before repetition
20:23 Connect motion, contact and evidence
💡 HOW TO STUDY
1. Watch the mechanism once before taking notes.
2. Replay the worked example and explain each step aloud.
3. Pause at the practice scene before revealing the answer.
4. Revisit the questions tomorrow without your notes.

📚 SOURCES AND SCOPE
Source: mapped Machinist curriculum BC L4, PDF pages 141–141. Original narration, examples and diagrams. Source versions and supplementary references are recorded in the curriculum map and notes.
Original illustrations and study values. Separate shaft-end views illustrate exact speed ratio without pretending to show cutting contact or actual machine hand. Starts/flutes surface models omit cutter profiles. All speeds, feed, allowances, times and inspection limits are assigned examples, not recommended settings. F15.04 contribution is partial transfer and process comparison; hobbing is distinct from the national conventional-milling performance. Actual machine setup, proving and competency require approved equipment-specific procedures and supervised practice.
This series maps the stated curriculum and identifies supplementary teaching. Coverage does not establish exact equivalence to the current examination syllabus.
