The SOLE purpose of this video is to provide information to anyone planning on doing this hike in the future. This is not in any way intended to encourage the viewers to take the same route we took as there are a couple variation to ascent Mount Smuts. The author is not responsible for any injuries or even death that might result in following what is shown in this video. Your safety is your responsibility and I encouraged you to do the same thing I did before even trying to set foot in this mountain, and that is to mentally prepare and watch countless videos and reviews about this hike.
The book "Scrambles in the Canadian Rockies" by Allan Kane is an authority in the world of scrambling and this summit is rated as one of the most difficult ascent amongst the over 175 summit featured in that book. Rightfully so, there is a high level of exposure climbing the "staircase", scrambling the "chimneys", traversing the exposed ledge, and down climbing from the summit. Reaching the summit is only halfway as the gulley presents an equally demanding down climb from the summit.
Mount Smuts has it's equal share of fatalities in the past. In 2018, a 27-year old veteran hiker from Calgary fell off from this cliff while scaling this mountain. In 2005, a 53-year old experienced hiker from Calgary, fell while down climbing. A tribute containing his ashes are situated in the summit to commemorate to his memory. Honor and respect to these two gentlemen!
