Formerly known as Bree Street, Lilian Ngoyi Street was severely damaged by the July 2023 gas explosion. The rehabilitation has been carried out in phases, with the remaining 1.8km section between Ntemi Piliso and End streets still undergoing major construction work. As of September 2026, the City of Johannesburg says the project is expected to reach completion by 31 October 2026. The work includes road resurfacing, sidewalks, stormwater infrastructure, underground services, lighting and other upgrades.
