Eleven days after Tsunade refused him in Tanzaku Town, Kabuto Yakushi walked up to the gates of the Hidden Leaf alone, unarmed, with a letter in Orochimaru's handwriting. Give me back my hands, and I will teach the boy for one year. Any technique. No conditions from my side. Jiraiya said no three times. Then the Fifth Hokage said the sentence that decided everything: he is also the only living person who has had his hands inside that boy's seal. This is Naruto's own account of the twelve months that followed, told at thirteen with nothing left out. A house two miles outside the village that is on no map. Twenty-seven chalk boxes on the kitchen door, one joint of Orochimaru's hands paid for every lesson delivered, and no fingers, ever. Jiraiya throwing him off a cliff four hundred times and asking why. Tsunade sinking nine hundred leaves in a bowl and asking what it costs. And Orochimaru, who never raises his voice, never calls him stupid, and never once lies to him in three hundred and sixty-five days, asking what else he is capable of. Naruto cooks his own arm and learns the price of every technique he keeps. He is taught the design of his own seal by the man who murdered the Third Hokage, and he learns the Nine-Tails' real name from the same mouth. Itachi and Kisame come up the garden path and find three Sannin coming out of one door. And because Orochimaru is on a leash in Konoha's hills, he never calls Sasuke, and Sasuke spends a whole year alone in an empty district wondering what he did wrong. Then on the last morning the fingers close, and they are not Tsunade's work, and there is somebody standing in the kitchen doorway asking to be taught too.
