Give That Game Genre a Chance

Your next favourite game might be hiding in a genre you always skip. Trying different video game genres could be exactly what makes your next gaming session feel fresh. In “Give That Game Genre a Chance,” we explore why we dismiss unfamiliar games, how familiar gameplay can become a routine, and what happens when we step outside our gaming comfort zone. From the tactical decisions of XCOM 2 and deckbuilding in Slay the Spire to farming in Stardew Valley and the action of Hades, different genres offer different ways to enjoy gaming. We also discuss how to find an inviting first game, get comfortable being a beginner, and recognise when something simply isn’t for you. You don’t have to love every genre. But giving one a fair chance might introduce you to your next favourite game. Which game genre do you usually avoid? Has a game ever changed your mind?
