Japan's SCMaglev could represent the biggest change in high-speed rail since the original bullet train. While conventional high-speed trains still depend on steel wheels and rails, Japan's superconducting maglev eliminates that contact at high speed — and has already carried passengers at 603 km/h.
The difference isn't simply about breaking another speed record.
At extreme speeds, conventional trains face growing problems with wheel and rail wear, vibration, aerodynamic drag, power consumption, and other physical limitations. Japan's SCMaglev approaches the problem differently, using superconducting magnets to levitate roughly 10 centimeters above a purpose-built guideway.
Japan now plans to turn decades of testing into the Chuo Shinkansen, connecting Tokyo and Nagoya before eventually extending toward Osaka.
But there's a catch: maglev requires entirely new infrastructure, costs tens of billions of dollars, and cannot simply run on today's railway tracks.
So Japan isn't replacing the bullet train yet. It's attempting something potentially more important — proving that wheels may no longer be the only answer to ultra-high-speed rail.
If SCMaglev succeeds commercially, what happens to the next generation of bullet trains?
