Castrum Doloris 1972 | Royal Danish Funerals (ep. 12)

For more than 350 years, deceased kings and queens have rested on the castrum doloris in Christiansborg Palace Church. Castrum doloris, which means “Castle of grief” in Latin, is the ceremony in which the coffins of prominent individuals are displayed publicly before burial. This tradition became a fixed part of royal funeral rituals in Denmark after the introduction of absolute monarchy in 1660, when Frederick III was the first king to lie in state on the castrum doloris. In this film, museum curator Peter Kristiansen recounts the story of how the castrum doloris is the only element of the ceremonial of absolute monarchy that is still carried out almost unchanged, as was the case at the most recent royal funeral in 1972.
