The Warthog is almost as iconic as the Master Chief himself. It also represents something much bigger about Halo: Combat Evolved - the way it combines, evolves, and sometimes challenges the conventions of the first-person shooter.
In this video, I take an in-depth look at Halo: Combat Evolved, the evolution of the FPS genre, and the complicated question of how we define genre in video games. I explore video game genre theory and the famous narratology vs. ludology debate: should we understand games primarily through their stories and narratives, or through their rules, mechanics, systems, and player interaction?
In this video:
• Halo: Combat Evolved and the FPS genre
• The evolution of first-person shooters
• Halo's approach to gameplay and game design
• Video game genre theory
• Narratology vs. ludology
• Gameplay vs. narrative
• How mechanics influence genre
• Halo's influence on first-person shooters
• The relationship between story, mechanics and player experience
• What actually defines a video game genre?
