As AI photos and videos become more sophisticated and pervasive, bad actors learn new ways to influence what chatbots tell us, and traditional media outlets continue to face cuts, how do we find credible news sources, especially around election time?
We talked with media literacy expert Dr. Michael Spikes, an assistant professor at the Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications at Northwestern University; the co-founder of the Illinois Media Literacy Coalition; and the Illinois state chapter leader for Media Literacy Now. Our conversation ranged from what false or misleading information younger people are most likely to fall for, to red flags in media sources. And while he was reluctant to recommend any fact-checking sites (and explained why), he did talk about how we can all train ourselves to be good media consumers.
