An ancient shrine hall at night. Across the gold-leaf wall, the great serpent Yamata no Orochi coils through the clouds, and all eight of its heads lean down out of the painting toward the floor. Below them, eight jars of sake stand in a row. Beside the jars, the storm god Susanoo sits alone, his sword at his side, and looks up without fear.
In the oldest Japanese myth, the Orochi had eight heads and eight tails, and eyes as red as winter cherries. Susanoo did not fight it head-on. He prepared eight vats of strong sake and waited. The serpent drank until it fell asleep — and only then did he draw his sword. From its tail came the legendary blade Kusanagi.
This is slow Japanese ambient for that long, patient wait. A low shakuhachi breathes in long tones. Sparse koto notes drift like lamplight across old gold. A distant taiko is struck rarely, and now and then a small temple bell rings once and fades. There is no melody to follow and no rhythm to follow.
▪ What you are hearing
Two pieces, gently crossfaded and returning through the three hours. Nothing starts or stops abruptly, so you can leave it running and forget it is there.
▪ Best for
Deep focus and study · Meditation and breathing practice · Reading · Quiet work · Winding down before sleep
▪ Instruments
Shakuhachi · Koto · Shamisen drone · Distant taiko · A small temple bell
The volume is set deliberately low so it sits behind you rather than in front of you.
