Spring has well and truly sprung at the Garden Hoard NZ! 🌱🇳🇿 The second month of spring has brought rising temperatures, fresh growth, plenty of harvesting, and a few surprises along the way. But it's also been a windy start, and the peas have taken a bit of a beating! 🌿 In this month's garden update: 🫛 A MASSIVE pea harvest! Despite the wind knocking some plants over, there's still a fantastic crop to harvest. With around 12 kilos of peas harvested this month, the freezer is filling up fast! 🥬 Making room for summer: It's time to clear out the cabbages and carrots, save a few cabbages for seed, and get the garden beds ready for the next round of planting. There's also sauerkraut in the making! 🍌 The bananas are back! New green growth and growing pups show that the banana plants are coming back to life as the weather warms. 🌸 A walk through the orchard: The apple tree gets a much-needed prune, the peach tree starts fruiting, and the plums are looking particularly promising this year. 🐞 Nature fighting back: Aphids have appeared on a few Black Doris plum branches, but there's an exciting development — ladybird eggs are hatching, and the hungry larvae are already feeding on the aphids. Will nature take care of the problem for us? 🥔 Potato experiment: The potted potatoes are sprouting, and this time I'm determined to give them better care after last season's disappointing harvest and slug and snail damage. 🍅 Tomatoes for summer: The young tomato plants are growing in their pots, waiting for the right time to head into the garden. 📊 The monthly garden statistics: We finish with a look at temperatures, soil warming, day length, the month's harvest, and a spring forecast as the garden moves out of its slower winter period. Everything is changing at a super rate of knots, and there's plenty happening as we prepare for the summer growing season. Join me for another month of real-life gardening, harvesting, experiments, and discoveries here in New Zealand. Thanks for stopping by the Garden Hoard NZ. See you next month at the Hoard! 🌱 #GardenHoardNZ #OctoberGardenUpdate #SpringGardening #NewZealandGardening #PeaHarvest #VegetableGarden #HomegrownFood #FruitOrchard #OrganicGardening #Ladybirds #GardenLife #GrowingYourOwnFood
