What is Happening to the American Church? | Martin Doblmeier | Ep. 22

Church attendance is declining, more Americans are identifying as religiously unaffiliated (the so-called “nones”), and Christianity has become increasingly divided by politics. But is the American church disappearing, or is it becoming something different? In this episode of Holy Uncertain, hosts Lauren Ranzino and Chris McLeod are joined by award-winning documentary filmmaker Martin Doblmeier, founder of Journey Films and director of the new PBS documentary series Christianity at a Crossroads, to explore what's happening to Christianity in America. Drawing from more than four decades of documenting faith and religion, Martin shares what he's learned about why people are leaving churches, how political divisions and religious harm have shaped the American Christian experience, and where unexpected signs of growth and renewal are emerging. In this conversation, we discuss: -Declining church attendance and the rise of religious “nones” -How politics and polarization are reshaping American Christianity -Religious harm, institutional distrust, and why people are leaving churches -The growth of immigrant congregations and changing demographics -House churches and alternative models of Christian community -What it might look like for churches to become more focused on people and belonging rather than preserving institutions As younger generations rethink their relationship with organized religion, what might the future of the American church look like? And what parts of Christianity are worth holding onto as the church continues to change? Watch Christianity at a Crossroads on PBS: https://www.pbs.org/show/christianity...
