You're down on a cut shot and you don't know where to aim: full, thin, somewhere in between. In this video: how to aim with the shaft. Your cue shaft is a ruler you already own. The tip and the width of the shaft, laid against the object ball, give you four marks: full, three quarters, half and a quarter. Simple, no math, and you keep your own stroke and your own cue.
What's inside:
The ball is already a ruler: what full, three-quarter, half-ball and quarter-ball hits mean, and why the half-ball is the cut you face all night (plus a hand trick you can try in your chair)
The middle of your tip is your line of aim: middle to middle, middle to the edge, and where three quarters lives
The quarter-ball points at empty cloth: how the edge of the shaft gives you a starting mark
Why the shaft can fool your eyes: parallax, where your head has to sit, keeping the tip close, and progressive glasses
The one mark to use if you won't practise, and why soft half-ball cuts catch the near point (throw)
For stiff backs and slower players: reading the shaft without bending low, and a two-mug kitchen drill for tonight
The key: calibrate your own marks once, on your own table, with your own cue
This is a guide for your eyes, not a magic system: it gets you close, and your practice does the rest. Facts in this video come from published sources, mainly Dr. Dave Alciatore's work on the physics of pool and his Billiards Digest columns of July 2011 and November 2014, the World Pool-Billiard Association equipment specifications and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Everything in this video is written down in order in The Complete Smart Pool Library: aiming and pocketing with older eyes, cue ball control without hitting hard, eight-ball strategy for facing stronger players, and a fourth book on a stance that spares your back (only in the complete set).

Which mark will you check first on your table? Tell me in one word: full, three quarters, half or quarter.
Safety: work within a comfortable range and never force a position that hurts; widen your feet before bending your back, and lower your eyes rather than craning your neck. Never climb up or sit on the table to reach a shot; use the bridge or pick another shot. Questions about glasses, progressive or bifocal lenses belong with your optometrist or ophthalmologist. Nothing in this video is medical or optical advice, and no result is guaranteed.
