This is a Rat Utopia | The Universe 25 Experiment

This video was just for fun! Universe 25 was a famous 1968 behavioral study by American ethologist John B. Calhoun that created a mouse "utopia" with abundant resources to test the effects of overpopulation. Built by John B. Calhoun at a National Institutes of Health facility, the 101-by-101-inch enclosure offered unlimited food, water, and nesting materials with no predators or disease. Initial Population: The space could hold up to 3,840 mice and started with just four healthy breeding pairs (eight mice total). Rapid Growth: The population doubled every 55 days initially, peaking at 2,200 mice by the 19th month. The Behavioral Sink: Because basic survival needs were met, infant mortality dropped, leading to an overabundance of young mice. Social structures broke down. Older dominant mice became hyper-aggressive, while many young males retreated into social isolation, becoming passive "the beautiful ones" who only groomed and ate. Extinction: Females stopped displaying maternal instincts and attacked their young. Mating eventually ceased entirely, leading to the complete extinction of the colony by the 600th day.
