Our Fireside Friends are seven weeks old and this week brought a wonderful new experience time to explore our outdoor sensory play area!
We are so glad to say that the smoke from the wildfires has lifted, giving the puppies an opportunity to enjoy some beautiful fresh air. The temperature was just right, with a gentle breeze blowing through the play area as they explored.
One of our favourite things to watch was their reaction to feeling the breeze against their coats and different parts of their bodies. You may notice a puppy suddenly turn around with the funniest expression, trying to figure out what just touched me? Only to discover there was nothing there! 🥰
Experiences that seem very ordinary to us can be completely new to a seven-week-old puppy. At this age, puppies are still within an important socialization period, when positive, manageable exposure to different environments and sensations helps them learn about the world around them.
🐾 Seven Developmental Milestones at Seven Weeks
1. Exploring with greater confidence
Puppies are becoming bolder and increasingly motivated to investigate their surroundings.
2. Developing coordination and body awareness
Running, climbing, turning, chasing and navigating different surfaces continue to strengthen balance and physical coordination.
3. Learning through their senses
New sounds, smells, textures, temperatures — and even the feeling of a breeze against their coat — provide information about the world around them.
4. Strengthening social skills
Play with littermates continues to teach communication, boundaries and appropriate social interaction.
5. Growing problem-solving abilities
Puppies are beginning to show their individual ways of approaching something unfamiliar — jumping right in, pausing to observe, investigating independently or looking for reassurance.
6. Building confidence and resilience
Confidence doesn’t mean feeling uncertain. Small, manageable experiences give puppies opportunities to notice something unfamiliar, work through it, recover and move forward.
7. Individual personalities are becoming more apparent
At seven weeks, we continue to see more of who each puppy is becoming, how they engage, explore, seek connection, respond to novelty and navigate their environment.
There is no single “best” response to a new experience. Our goal is to give our puppies safe, age-appropriate opportunities to explore and experience little successes along the way.
Enjoy watching our Fireside Friends frolic in the great outdoors and watch closely for those adorable moments when a little breeze leaves them wondering, “What was that?” 😂🐾
Before we know it, these little ones will be heading off to begin their next adventures with their forever families. ❤️
