Nobody could move dirt fast enough for the massive highways, dams, and canals of the 1960s. Caterpillar’s answer was the *657 Scraper* — a 44-cubic-yard earthmover powered by **two separate diesel engines producing 785 combined horsepower**, with one engine pulling from the front and another driving from the rear. But raw horsepower wasn’t enough. The 657 suffered from high-speed “loping,” gained a redesigned cushion hitch, evolved into the more powerful *657B**, and eventually became part of Caterpillar’s remarkable **push-pull system**, where two scrapers could temporarily couple together and put roughly **1,900 horsepower* into the ground during the hardest part of loading.
