Connor Hellebuyck beat Canada for Olympic gold in February. Today he got his way out of Winnipeg, the third American star to leave a Canadian team in 10 months, after Quinn Hughes and Brady Tkachuk. So is there really an "American exodus" from Canada? I went through 45 years of star exits and 20 years of NHL ice time to find out, and the answer isn't what the headlines say.

How it works: Test 1 weights every player by ice time (NHL API club stats, 2005-06 to 2026-27, 23,335 player-team seasons) and compares the share played by U.S.-born players on Canadian vs U.S. teams. Test 2 takes the 50 best Americans each season (top 45 scorers + top 5 goalies by wins) and counts how many played in Canada, against a fair share of 7 of 32 teams (~11 of 50). "Star exits" = captains, All-Stars or award winners who forced their way out of a Canadian team (trade request, refused to re-sign, holdout) since 1980.

Are American stars really done with Canada, or is it just leverage? Tell me in the comments.
