MKO Abiola’s Legacy Revisited as Tinubu Attends Documentary Premiere

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu attended the national premiere of MKO, a documentary on the life, political journey and legacy of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and Creative Arts in Iganmu, Lagos. The screening, held on October 1, Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary, formed part of activities marking the occasion. President Tinubu attended alongside the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and other senior government officials and dignitaries. Directed and produced by Nigerian-American filmmaker Ose Oyamendan, MKO revisits Abiola’s political journey, the June 12, 1993 presidential election, its annulment by the military government and the pro-democracy struggle that followed. The documentary also features archival footage and accounts from several personalities connected to the period, providing an opportunity to revisit one of the defining chapters in Nigeria’s democratic history. The national premiere places Abiola’s story and the sacrifices associated with the June 12 struggle within the broader reflection on Nigeria’s democratic journey and independence.
