In this episode, I share how, on day one of owning my first gym, I believed being the best trainer would put other gyms out of business—then learned that excellence at the craft doesn’t equal excellence at running a company. Drawing on Michael Gerber’s The E-Myth Revisited and Statistics Canada’s findings that the top cause of small business failure is inexperienced ownership, I explain why management skills like financial literacy, communication, staff supervision, and market development matter more than having the “best” product. I break down practical business skills—marketing, hiring, selling more to existing best clients, and managing people—and illustrate the lesson with examples like Rogue’s early partnership with CrossFit, VHS beating Betamax through licensing, Word beating WordPerfect through bundling, Dollar Shave Club beating Gillette through marketing and distribution, and Kodak inventing digital photography but failing to build a business around it.
