L'autre versant | Tales from the Chamonix backcountry

A movie by Yannick Boissenot. Narrated by Anselme Baud And starring Anselme Baud, Mathis Dumas, Pierre Hourticq, Victor Lourdel, Sandy Schtofen. Ski touring goes after the line nobody has drawn. Two skis and a rope partner are enough to find out what waits past the ridge. The Ubac is shaped for that. In the seventies, skiing went looking for the other side of the mountain. Anselme Baud skinned up the Mont-Blanc massif with nothing but skis and the need to see what lay out of sight, and came down faces that had only ever been climbed. He opened a way, and it has stayed open ever since. Every winter somebody stands at the top of a line he was the first to look at. The shapes have changed, the need that sends a skier up has not. A generation rides that way today on Ubac skis, and reads his lines its own terms.
