Almost five hundred years before Columbus, Norse sailors from Greenland reached North America. For centuries, the only evidence was two Icelandic sagas. Then, in 1960, a Norwegian explorer and an archaeologist found a Norse camp at L'Anse aux Meadows in Newfoundland. And in 2021, a solar storm from the year 993, recorded in tree rings, gave the exact year the Norse were cutting wood there: 1021. In about sixteen minutes: Erik the Red and Greenland, Leif Erikson's voyage, Helluland, Markland and Vinland, the excavation, the iron and the butternuts, the solar-storm date, why the Norse left, and the famous fakes from the Vinland Map to the Kensington Runestone.
