Did you know there are aircraft in America that can legally be flown without a traditional pilot license? Under FAA Part 103, certain single-seat ultralight aircraft can operate without the normal pilot certification required for conventional airplanes.
In this video, we count down 12 of the most fascinating ultralight aircraft, from simple open-air flying machines to surprisingly advanced all-metal airplanes.
You’ll see aircraft including the Aerolite 103, Quicksilver MX 103, Hummel UltraCruiser, Legal Eagle XL, Eurofly MiniFox, DAR Solo UL, Phantom X-1, Kolb UltraStar, Fisher FP-303, Hurricane 103, Volmer VJ-24W, and Volmer VJ-23.
Some can fit inside a garage.
Some are built from wood.
Some weigh less than many motorcycles.
And one is so minimal that the pilot can literally use their own legs as landing gear.
We also explain the basics of FAA Part 103, including the strict limits on aircraft weight, fuel capacity, speed, recreational use, and why “no pilot license required” does not mean “no training or rules.”
Which of these ultralight aircraft would you actually trust yourself to fly?
Watch to the end and tell us your favorite in the comments.
