Today we're visiting a historically important location in the Gravesham area of Kent. These are two Cement Kiln Tunnels, one of which was turned into an air raid shelter during WW2.
Both tunnels started out as passageways going through the cliffs linking up two chalk quarries. When the quarry closed the site was taken over by a cement works, which resulted in these tunnels being repurposed and used as part of the disposal system of large cement kilns built on the ground above them.
During this process the chalk tunnels were lined with brick and several smaller tunnels were dug coming off the main tunnel at 90 degree angles. At the end of each of the side tunnels there's a metal chute in the roof used for emptying the waste material from above. This material would have fallen into wooden carts sitting on small railway-style tracks. Once full the carts were manually pulled out of the small tunnel and onto a large metal disk, they were then turned 90 degrees and pushed onto the main set of tracks in the larger tunnel. From here the spoil could be easily taken outside and to the disposal area.
During World War 2 one of these Kiln tunnels was repurposed as an Air Raid Shelter for the factory workers nearby. The side tunnels were bricked up and the cart tracks were removed. In this tunnel there's pencil graffiti from WW2 featuring planes and a depiction of Adolf Hitler.
This second tunnel featured in our very first video, we thought we'd add this on so we could compare the differences between the original Kiln tunnel and the Air Raid Shelter one was turned into.
Hope you enjoy the video.
