No one ever considered that the day might, one day, come...until it did. The final choir concert at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School under the direction of Mr. Ronald Cohen. One of the most emotional events to take place in the school's auditorium, this landmark concert marked the end of a dynasty never to be forgotten by members from as far back as 1966. Alumni attended from near and far to take part in the historical concert, singing choir traditionals such as "When Rooks Fly Homeward," "Hallelujah Chorus" (from Messiah), and "Heilig."
During the combined alumni performance, unbeknownst to the circumspect director, the group planned to perform a very special and touching tribute. The love from the group during this final event was palpable at this moment if not at any other (though the respect that the group has always had for Ron Cohen has never been the subject of question or debate).
There is also a subtle beauty in Mr. Cohen's inconspicuous attire change for the finale ("Heilig"). In these final moments, the message that he exudes is "While I've always been the director, I've always been one of you...and one with you."
Here's to the years defined by hard work, discipline, sacrifice, pursuit of perfection, and above all, love of music and of one another.
