This is Part 3 of our Two Wheeled Honeymoon around Iceland! 🇮🇸🏍️
We start in Hellishólar. As we were spending two nights at our cottage we could ride with less luggage, however this meant we had to double back on ourselves.
The reason we had pushed so far and ridden for so long the previous day was to strategically put ourselves closer to the start of the F210 and our route towards Landmannalaugar.
Unfortunately, Iceland had other ideas...
The heavy rain from the previous day continued all through the night and well into the next morning. With the amount of water coming down, the river crossings on the F210 had become too deep and dangerous, and were advised it would be impassable or closed.
Our new plan was the F225, which meant a lot more 'tarmac road' riding to get there, battling incredibly strong winds and relentless rain along the way. To make things even more interesting, our riding gear was starting to fail us and hadn't even properly dried out from the day before. 😂
But we were in Iceland, we had limited time and we wanted to make the absolute most of every day we had.
Looking back, we probably should have planned to spend several days exploring the Highlands rather than trying to squeeze so much into our schedule.
Although, just a few days later, snow hit the Highlands anyway, so even with the perfect plan there are some things you simply can't predict in Iceland!
Despite being absolutely soaked, this turned into one of those days we'll never forget.
The scenery was incredible. Riding through such a strange, remote and dramatic landscape genuinely felt like we'd left Earth and landed on another world. Black sand, mountains, rivers, rain and almost nobody around.
And strangely enough, the wet black sand was actually REALLY grippy!
So the rain did have one advantage. 😂 We later discovered that dry black sand is much harder to ride!
Somewhere out in the storm we bumped into another lunatic out in it on two wheels, Jasmine! We ended up crossing paths with her more than several times during the trip and it was brilliant chatting with another like minded traveller crazy enough to be out riding in those conditions...... and she camped most of her trip! Hats off to her!

After meeting in the middle of Iceland, it turns out she's from our neck of the woods back in the UK, only around 1.5 hours away from us!
We also saw plenty of Icelandic rescue vehicles out that day and noticeably fewer people than usual. Apparently you're either crazy enough to head out into the Icelandic storm... or sensible enough to stay somewhere warm and cosy. 😂
We were determined to enjoy the adventure, but we also made sure we weren't going to become the ones needing rescuing. Sometimes the best adventure decision is knowing when NOT to cross that river.
A very wet day. A very wild day. And an absolutely unforgettable one.
This is exactly why we came to Iceland. 🇮🇸
