Fretless Experimental Funk Bass Jam with Double Stops

Here’s a funky jam on my fretless Stradi bass with double stops, fingerstyle plucking, vibrato, slides, and other fun one can have on a fretless :) It’s a single take performance and I’m taking risk so there are some rough edges, but that’s where the fun is! I’m playing my fretless Stradi Symphony Cora bass strung up with Ernie Ball Super Slinkys and used 4 pedals throughout the recording. I used a Rodenberg 707b clean booster, a Seamoon FX Skye Machine chorus, a DG Hyper Luminal compressor, and a Boss OC-2 octaver. I recorded the signal with my Eich T-300 amp’s DI into my audio interface and used no plugins or digital processing. I programmed the drums in Cubase (creating the grooves and fills, no presets) while writing the bass lines, then I jammed on it for a while and recorded this take on it. Mastering was done in Ozone with neutral EQ to preserve the original tone of the bass. The bass has a custom piezo bridge pickup and a Delano Xtender dual coil, they’re balanced with slide pots and a 3-way switch on the back. I’ve really come to appreciate piezo pickups since playing this bass, it’s articulate and adds a nice spark to the tone, feels more direct from the fingers. I’ve played electric fretless basses with mainly jazz pups for years so the piezo was new to me, I think the modern and traditional can merge very well and having best of both worlds at your hands makes great sense. The fingerboard is made of Bocote, a nice wood for fretless that takes round wound strings well, after rocking out on it like this for almost 2 years all is still fine. The bass has an Amazaque neck, roasted Alder body, and a quartersawn Oak top wood that’s fire torched with a traditional Shou Sugi Ban finish. Stradi basses are hand made by Marek and Agnieszka Dąbek, a luthier couple from Poland that besides building these amazing instruments are the kindest and warmest people you’ll meet.
