The biggest surprise wasn't simply one particular place. It was the fact that their experience didn't always match what they had been told. Something they expected to dislike... They enjoyed. Something they thought would be strange... Started feeling normal. And somewhere along the journey, they began asking: “Why were we warned not to come here?” That's what makes travelling so interesting. You can hear opinions about a country from friends, family, social media and television. You can read about it. You can watch videos about it. You can hear all the warnings. But until you actually visit... You don't really know what your experience will be. And America is especially difficult to judge from a single perspective. The country is enormous, with completely different regions, landscapes, communities and lifestyles. You can visit a huge city... Then discover a quiet small town. You can drive through mountains... Then find forests, deserts, beaches and wide-open countryside. You can experience completely different food, accents, architecture and local cultures... And still be in the same country. For these British tourists, that's what made the journey so unexpected. They didn't simply discover America. They discovered their own version of America.
