I took an old rusty camping axe and gave it a full restoration for Bushcraft Builds #2.
I started by sanding the rust from the axe head and repairing the damaged edge before moving on to the handle. I stripped away the old varnish, refined the shape and gave it a more rugged finish.
While some filler was curing, I spent a bit of time reading Bushcraft 101 before getting back to the build.
Once the handle was ready, I fitted the axe head, scorched the wood with a blow torch, sanded it back and applied linseed oil to bring out the grain and protect the finish.
After sharpening the edge, I oiled the axe head, then made a striker guard for the handle and a custom sheath to finish the build.
The final step was taking the restored axe out into the woods and actually putting it to work, and thankfully, it performed really well.
This is Bushcraft Builds #2, a series where I restore, make and improve useful outdoor gear that I can take out and use on future trips.
