Watercolour and ink painting in real time: one sketchbook page, from the first dip pen stroke to the very last touch. Whimsical 1 opens a series about the imaginary worlds of childhood and the fragile moment just before waking. What to draw, and how to paint it, was left to the dice each time. About the series Whimsical starts from the worlds I used to slip into as a child, where a small toy, a corner of the house or a shadow on the wall could become a whole universe. As we grow up, those worlds slowly fade, and each of us wakes to a reality that is never quite as beautiful as the dream. The series carries on from my earlier body of work, "at the end you must wake up", and stays with that last soft moment before the eyes open. It is about a kind of beauty we already know is only temporary. Further along, Whimsical will chart its own Map of Nowhere, a geography of feelings with a Sea of Longing and a Valley of 3am: a land that is nowhere, yet everyone recognises. Whimsical belongs to The Dice Game, a project where chance hands me the subjects and I work out how they get along on paper. Every layer gets two instructions from the dice: something to draw, and a rule for how to paint it. The 13 layers behind this page 1. Latte art (coffee & café) → colour only the background, leave the subject as line 2. Cocktail (tea & drinks) → splatter paint over it 3. Hourglass (time & clocks) → thin ink lines on the edges only 4. Herringbone (patterns & geometry) → shade it with hatching 5. Coffee cup (desk objects) → white contour lines 6. Anchor (sea & underwater) → thin ink lines on the edges only 7. Row houses (city & architecture) → thick, raised impasto strokes 8. Maple tree (trees & forest) → let the paint drip down 9. Melting clock (dreams & the surreal) → cool tones: sky blue, blue, purple 10. Sun (weather) → stamped texture 11. Hat (fashion & clothing) → green only 12. Coffee spoon (coffee & café) → stamped texture 13. Campfire (mountains & landscape) → earth tones: brown, terracotta, olive green The dip pen draws all 13 subjects first. Then the rest of the rules take over, worked in loose, wet watercolour, drips and splatter, ink hatching over the colour, Copic markers in pink and green, and the white gouache lines last. Edited from just under an hour of footage. About four minutes were trimmed out along the way, and everything you see plays at real speed. Find a quiet moment and paint, read or simply rest along with it.
