WWII Plane Crash Site | What To Do In Port Hardy | Explore Vancouver Island | Hiking Van Isle

#WWIIPlaneCrashSite #WhatToDoInPortHardy #ExploreVancouverIsland This weeks video features a well preserved World War II plane that unfortunately went down in the town of Port Hardy, British Columbia. If you're looking for what to do in Port Hardy while you explore Vancouver Island, this should definitely be on your list. The trail is a 4.2km out and back hike with only 153m gain in elevation. Though it's not overly steep, there are certain areas that require the use of ropes to repel down. Make sure you wear proper hiking shoes and be mindful of wet/ muddy trail conditions. On April 19th, 1944, Dakota 576 was coming in for landing in Port Hardy. Due to inclement weather, the pilot, officer JM Talbot missed the first approach and went around for another try. Unfortunately, the plane ran out of fuel and crash landed in a forest, killing both Talbot, and his navigator Officer TS Wardlow. Sgt TR Moss survived the crash and was found by a search party hours later. The trailhead begins just north of Bear Cove Park. Take Bear Cove Highway, and park your vehicle at the Bear Cove Boat Launch parking lot. From there, you’ll walk north along the same road towards the ferry for a few minutes until you come across a paved road going uphill to your right. Nearing the top of the paved section, the pavement heads right but the trail turns off to the left into the bush. The first km is paved, and the second takes you through the forest, looking out over Hardy Bay at times, and down a few steep areas (ropes included) until you each the plane. Brush is a bit overgrown, and the trail can be muddy at certain times of year. We hiked in August 2021, and there was little mud. Thanks so much for watching these videos guys!
