How to Install Base Cabinets | Easy DIY Cabinet Installation

Want to learn how to install base cabinets? In this video, I’ll walk you through my DIY base cabinet installation from start to finish — including leveling, shimming, securing the cabinets to the wall, installing the toe kick, priming, painting, and finishing everything off for a clean, built-in look. I installed three base cabinets in my garage to create more storage and workspace. I started by removing the existing baseboards so the cabinets could sit flush against the wall. I then removed the cabinet doors and drawers to make everything easier to work with. For the cabinet against the side wall, I added a spacer to give the door enough clearance to open properly. From there, I positioned each cabinet, used shims and a level to get everything lined up correctly, and secured each cabinet to the wall. Once all three cabinets were installed, I screwed the cabinets together to make the entire run more secure. I trimmed off the excess shims with my oscillating multi-tool, cleaned everything up, installed the interior shelves, and added the toe kick. Next came the finishing work. I primed the cabinets using Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 All Surface Primer, added decorative molding along the toe kick, and painted the cabinets in BEHR Dark Ash. After two coats of paint, I reinstalled the cabinet doors and drawers and the project was complete!
