Sophie Laird - Live at Sansom Studios

Watch Sophie Laird perform a live set at Sansom Studios. Sophie Laird is a Scottish singer-songwriter from Glasgow, now based in Birmingham. She discovered songwriting while studying Jazz Vocals at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, and her music brings together jazz, contemporary songwriting and Scottish folk, with influences including Joni Mitchell, John Martyn, Nick Drake and Adrienne Lenker. Moving away from Scotland helped Sophie recognise how important its musical traditions had become to her own sound. That influence comes through particularly in her focus on storytelling - something she sees as central to folk music and to her own writing. Her Spotlight on Birmingham session brings those influences together in a set shaped by thoughtful songwriting and a strong sense of identity.
