Whirlpool's own website says avoid vinegar in your dishwasher. Whirlpool's own help page says put two cups of it on the bottom rack. And on your washing machine, the biggest appliance makers in America flatly disagree, and one of them owns the cleaner it tells you to buy instead. Here's what every manufacturer actually says about a three-dollar jug of white vinegar, in their own words: the kettle and the iron, faucet aerators and shower heads, the garbage disposal myth, coffee makers and espresso machines, the dishwasher, stainless steel, the ice maker and water line, the washer, humidifiers, the tankless water heater flush, and the countertop that costs eight hundred dollars. Descale the kettle: one part vinegar, two parts water, boil, stand overnight. Never vinegar in the iron. 2. Soak the faucet aerator overnight in vinegar (tape the plier jaws). 3. Baking soda under the sink for the disposal — ice doesn't sharpen anything. 4. Check your coffee maker's manual; never vinegar in an espresso machine. 5. Clean the dishwasher filter; vinegar cycle only once in a while, bottom rack. 6. Look up your washer's manual by model number and search the word vinegar. 7. Replace the furnace humidifier water panel this season. 8. Flush the tankless heater the way YOUR brand says. 9. Keep vinegar off marble, limestone and travertine. Tell me in the comments: what state are you in, and which machine have you been putting vinegar in? My book on what appliance repairs should actually cost is called What It Should Cost. SAFETY Turn the power off at the unit and at the breaker before any water heater work. Never mix vinegar and bleach — together they release chlorine gas. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas company from outside. #whitevinegar #appliancerepair #homeowner
