GTA Was Almost Cancelled. Now GTA 6 Is an $8 Billion Bet

Dundee, Scotland, the mid-1990s: a small studio makes a game about police chases, the police cars break, and the team keeps the bug. The game is late, almost cancelled, and then a London publicist makes everyone angry about it. Thirty years later, Grand Theft Auto 6 comes out on 19 November 2026, and Take-Two expects about 8 billion dollars this year. This is the story of Rockstar Games: the studio bought for one pound plus its debts, the three-week delay after 9/11, Hot Coffee, a billion dollars in three days, the hours, the people who left, the leaks, two delays, and the bet. The story told through company filings, court records and news reports, drawn simply.
