In 1977, a US Geological Survey researcher stood beside a telephone pole southwest of Mendota, California, next to a sign marking where the ground had been in 1925. The two points were about twenty-nine feet apart. The cause is a layer of clay called the Corcoran Clay, the floor of an ice-age lake that filled this valley six hundred thousand years ago and now sits buried across thousands of square miles of the subsurface. Pumping groundwater out from beneath it removes the pressure holding its particles apart, and unlike sand, clay does not spring back. The compaction is permanent.
